Scientific Update May 2021 Issue 12
PMI
The 12th issue of the Scientific Update features an editorial by Dr. Jorge Insuasty, our Chief Life Sciences Officer. There, he discusses what's on the horizon for research at PMI as we expand to develop products that go beyond tobacco and nicotine. Dr. Insuasty describes how these new research areas help drive our transformation, and how they complement the concept of a smoke-free future.
Also in this issue, we take a look back at PMI events and milestones from 2020, such as the debut of our Open Science virtual event series, the historic decision by the U.S. FDA regarding our leading heated tobacco product, and more.
Another highlight from this issue: rather than focusing on our smoke-free product assessment, we dive into the research expertise we've developed as a result of our rigorous assessment program and how that expertise feeds back into our scientific communities.

Reduced Risk Products ("RRPs”) is the term we use to refer to products that present, are likely to present, or have the potential to present less risk of harm to smokers who switch to these products versus continuing smoking. PMI has a range of RRPs in various stages of development, scientific assessment and commercialization. All of our RRPs are smoke-free products that deliver nicotine with far lower quantities of harmful and potentially harmful constituents than found in cigarette smoke.
